Balneotherapy in Stress Management: A Natural Approach for Soothing the Mind

Prof. Dr. Lolita Rapolienė

Klaipeda University, Baltic Medics Clinic, Lithuania
In today’s fast-paced and high-pressure society, chronic stress has become a major global health issue, contributing to a wide range of mental and physical conditions, including anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, and metabolic disorders. While conventional therapies such as pharmacological treatments, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other relaxation techniques have shown varying degrees of effectiveness, there is increasing interest in natural, integrative interventions. Balneotherapy—a therapeutic method utilizing mineral-rich water, peloids (healing mud), and gases—offers a scientifically supported, non-invasive, and holistic approach to stress relief and psychological recovery.
This lecture explores the complex physiological and psychological effects of stress, emphasizing its impact on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, cortisol levels, and overall neuroendocrine balance. It presents a comprehensive overview of balneotherapy, including its mechanisms of action, clinical indications and contraindications, safety considerations, and evidence-based outcomes.

Drawing on randomized controlled trials, biomarker analyses, and long-term follow-up studies—particularly those conducted in Lithuania—this session will demonstrate that balneotherapy significantly reduces salivary cortisol, improves mood and sleep, and enhances physical and emotional well-being. Compared to progressive muscle relaxation, resting, and even pharmacotherapy, balneotherapy shows superior or comparable outcomes in stress reduction and symptom relief. Combined therapies—such as balneotherapy with nature therapy, sapropel applications, or physical activity—further amplify these benefits.

Additionally, the lecture will highlight the safety of balneotherapy. Despite minimal and typically transient side effects, balneotherapy remains a safe option for a wide range of patients, including those with chronic stress and comorbidities.
The session concludes by advocating for the integration of balneotherapy into national health and wellness strategies as a preventative, therapeutic, and rehabilitative tool. This natural approach not only improves health outcomes but also enhances quality of life, social functioning, and resilience—offering a sustainable model for modern stress management.
